Three New Research Projects Into Coeliac Disease
Coeliac UK, the national charity for people with coeliac disease, announces it has granted funding for three medical projects totaling £300,000 over three years. 1 in 100 people in the UK has coeliac disease, an autoimmune disease caused by intolerence to gluten but only 1 in 8 or 12.5% of those have been diagnosed. There is no cure and no medication for coeliac disease and the only treatment is a life-long, strict gluten-free diet. Without a gluten-free diet, coeliac disease can lead to infertility, multiple miscarriage, osteoporosis, neurological deficits and bowel cancer... Small intestinal mucosa expression of putative chaperone fls485
Conclusions:
Expression and synthesis of fls485 are found in surface lining epithelia of normal human intestinal mucosa and deriving epithelial cell lines. An interdependence of enterocyte differentiation along the crypt-villus axis and fls485 chaperone activity might be possible. Lysosomal accumulation of gliadin p31-43 peptide induces oxidative stress and tissue transglutaminase-mediated PPAR{gamma} downregulation in intestinal epithelial cells and coeliac mucosa
Conclusion
p31–43 accumulation in lysosomes leads to epithelial activation via the ROS–TG2 axis. TG2 works as a rheostat of ubiquitination and proteasome degradation and drives inflammation via PPAR downregulation. Pinpointing immune system disturbances in celiac disease
New research has identified four aspects of immune system disturbance which lead to the development of celiac disease. Nearly 40 different inherited risk factors which predispose to the disease have now been identified. These latest findings could speed the way towards improved diagnostics and treatments for the autoimmune complaint that affects 1 in 100 of the population, and lead to insights into related conditions such as type 1 diabetes. [Genetic and immunological processes in the pathomechanism of gluten-sensitive enteropathy and associated metabolic bone disorders.]
Authors: Vereckei E, Poór G, Kiss E
Celiac disease or gluten-sensitive enteropathy is the most common disease of jejunum, leading to malabsorption. It is an immune mediated disease induced by gluten at the presence of genetic predisposition. After gluten exposition, immune processes are induced by T-cell mediation causing typical intestinal and extra intestinal manifestations. The diagnosis of celiac disease is still set up on the result of jejunal biopsy and detecting of antibodies against endomysium and tissue transglutaminase. From genetic aspect, association with HLA DQ2/DQ8 is identified in celiac disease. On a strict gluten-free diet, the clinical, histological and serological results improve and remission of accompanying diseases may be achieved. In the etiopathogenesis of ... Gluten Free, Vegan Mayo Substitute: Mayola
Recently I discovered a gluten-free, vegan imitation mayonnaise product that comes in a handy squeeze bottle designed to be stored upside down like those cool Heinz ketchup squeeze bottles. This idea appealed to me because it involves inherent protection against cross contamination that might be caused by people using a knife to spread mayo on a slice of ordinary wheat-bearing danger bread. I like the flavor and consistency quite a bit. It is very similar to Vegenaise, but perhaps slightly sweeter. We discovered Mayola for sale on Amazon. It is made in the UK and prominently labeled as gluten free. Below are some photos of the product and a tomato sandwich I made using Ener-G rice bread. I quite like Mayola and will be buying more once this 6-pack runs out. I even use a little bit of it in a sauces for a stir fry sometimes. I'd give it 4 or 5 stars.
